Wines

Falerno del Massico Rosso (Tenute di San Castrese)

Falerno del Massico Rosso (Tenute di San Castrese)

The history of Villa Matilde coincides with the history of this wine: beloved of ancient Roman emperors and poets, destroyed by Phylloxera in more recent times, it was rediscovered thanks to the estate’s founder. A blend of Aglianico (80%) and Piedirosso (20%), it is deep ruby in color, with an ample bouquet and full, rich palate showing sweet tannins and silky texture. Ideally pairs flavorful dishes, red meat and seasoned cheeses.

Falerno del Massico Bianco ( Tenute di San Castrese)

Falerno del Massico Bianco ( Tenute di San Castrese)

The white half of Falerno and just as emblematic of the estate, from pure Falanghina grapes. Brilliant straw yellow in color, intense and ample bouquet of ripe fruit such as pineapple and peach, complemented by notes of roses, genista flowers and rosemary, sage leaves and vanilla evolving towards honey in time. Well balanced palate, rich, persistent flavors, combines personality and elegance. An ideal match with fish and white meat.

Vigna Caracci Falerno del Massico Bianco (Tenute di San Castrese)

Vigna Caracci Falerno del Massico Bianco (Tenute di San Castrese)

100% Falanghina (Falerna clone) from the Caracci vineyard, planted in 1968, here is Villa Matilde’s white cru wine. Fermented for 20 days in Allier oak barriques, it sojourns in barrique for a further 5 months previous to at least another 8 months’ bottle age. The result is deep straw yellow with golden reflections and an ample, characteristic bouquet of brier rose, banana, pineapple, Bartlett pear and cocoa butter with nuances of toasted nuts, vanilla and moss. Simultaneously fresh and silky on the palate, soft, elegant and persistent, with excellent body and distinct character. Impeccable vinification and the unique terroir of Falerno endow this wine with superb ageing potential.

Vigna Camarato Falerno del Massico Rosso (Tenute di San Castrese)

Vigna Camarato Falerno del Massico Rosso (Tenute di San Castrese)

The estate’s award-winning cru wine is solely issued in the finest vintages, from one of the oldest and best exposed hillside vineyards on the Villa Matilde property. Aged 1 year in Allier oak barriques and a further 12-18 months in bottle, this full, powerful red is characterized by its deep, dark crimson color, rich bouquet of dark berries, pepper, chocolate, coffee, licorice and vanilla and a luscious, voluptuous, lingering palate. It confirms the terroir of Falerno – volcanic, well exposed terrain caressed by sea breezes – as a land of excellence and complexity.

Cecubo (Tenute di San Castrese)

Cecubo (Tenute di San Castrese)

This full, majestic, fruit-packed red wine is named after the ancient Romans’ Caecubum. A blend of native grapes whose roots go back some 3000 years (approx. 45% Abbuoto, 35% Primitivo, 20% Piedirosso), it is solely released in outstanding vintages, from severely selected fruit. Fumé notes on the nose and palate speak of the lavic soil of the San Castrese vineyard, near the extinct volcano of Roccamonfina. Aged in Allier oak barriques for 1 year and bottle-aged a further 8 months, its very dark, deep ruby to garnet color reflects the richness and concentration on nose and palate. Plummy, fresh aromas of red berry fruit and nuances of vanilla, chocolate, licorice and tobacco confirmed on a lingering, lusciously structured palate showing silky tannins, finesse, balance and complexity. Very cellar-worthy, an ideal pairing with rich meat dishes, game, cheese, stews and casseroles.

Greco di Tufo (Tenute di Altavilla)

Greco di Tufo (Tenute di Altavilla)

This pure Greco exemplifies the region’s finest whites. Solely from old vines within the Tenute di Altavilla property, it shows an ample, mineral and fruity bouquet of apricots, white peaches and almonds confirmed on the complex, rich palate showing good structure and freshness, never aggressive. Will delightfully pair an entire Mediterranean menu.

Fiano di Avellino (Tenute di Altavilla)

Fiano di Avellino (Tenute di Altavilla)

One of Italy’s premier appellations and among the small number of truly cellar-worthy whites, this pure native Fiano from very old vines shows great structure and elegance. Estate-grown at Tenute di Altavilla, its elegant bouquet of ripe citrus fruit, apricots, peaches and hazelnuts is confirmed on the palate, evolving to exotic fruit and honey. Offers surprising depth and silky, sensuous texture.

Taurasi (Tenute di Altavilla)

Taurasi (Tenute di Altavilla)

This 100% Aglianico from the Tenute di Altavilla property is fine-tuned in 35-hectoliter oak barrels for 18 months and bottle-aged a further year. Very cellar-worthy, deep crimson in color, its rich, complex bouquet of licorice, brushwood, berry fruit and violets is confirmed on a lush, austere and elegant palate that wraps you up in complex flavors and aromas. Well worthy of its DOCG, it is the ideal accompaniment to structured meat dishes.

Falanghina (Campostatano)

Falanghina (Campostatano)

This entry-level brand from Villa Matilde is poetically named Campostellato (from the words for “starry field” in Italian), and showcases the region’s two most emblematic native grapes, while styling each for the international palate. In the case of the white varietal, it’s naturally Falanghina: youthful and fresh, appealingly straw-colored, its intense bouquet recalls vanilla, almonds and bread crust while the crisp, fruity and floral palate is an ideal pairing for shellfish, seafood appetizers and white meat. Also great as aperitif or with international cuisine.

Aglianico (Campostatano)

Aglianico (Campostatano)

This entry-level brand from Villa Matilde is poetically named Campostellato (from the words for “starry field” in Italian), and showcases the region’s two most emblematic native grapes, while styling each for the international palate. In the case of the red varietal, it’s naturally Aglianico. The wine’s deep crimson preludes a fragrant bouquet showing distinct blackberry and raspberry aromas; these are confirmed on a mellow, well balanced palate with good tannic structure, complementing meats and roasts.

Aglianico (Rocca dei Leoni)

Aglianico (Rocca dei Leoni)

Deep red, full-bodied and intense, this 100% native Aglianico speaks the ancient, authentic accents of its region. Estate-grown at Rocca dei Leoni, it shows an elegant bouquet of spice, blackberry and ripe red fruit, velvety texture and well balanced tannins. Round on the palate, ideal with flavorful first courses, red meat and seasoned cheese; or as a party-time plus!

Terre Cerase (Rocca dei Leoni)

Terre Cerase (Rocca dei Leoni)

100% Aglianico from partial skin maceration, this cherry-hued rosé is characterized by floral aromas and fruity notes of roses, ripe fruit, cherries and raspberries confirmed on a round, mellow and concentrated palate. Estate-grown at Rocca dei Leoni and extremely versatile with just about any fare, a perfect pairing with pizza!

Falanghina (Rocca dei Leoni)

Falanghina (Rocca dei Leoni)

This delicately fragrant native white is one of the region’s oldest and noblest. Estate-grown at Rocca dei Leoni, it shows a fruity and floral bouquet of pineapple, yellow peach, roses and sage leaves confirmed on the palate, firm structure and well balanced components. Appealing and fresh, ideal with fish, white meat, soft cheeses.

Eleusi (Tenute di San Castrese)

Eleusi (Tenute di San Castrese)

A sweet passito from Falanghina grapes grown within the Avallones’ Tenuta di Parco Nuovo property at Cellole, part of Villa Matilde’s principal estate. 100% Falanghina (Falerna clone), the grapes are left on the vines to dry in the sun until early November, when they are picked and placed on racks to complete the natural drying process; in December, they are soft-pressed and slowly fermented. The wine then sojourns 5 months in stainless steel and is lengthily bottle-aged. Deep amber with golden reflections, its bouquet is powerful and intense, reminiscent of vanilla, apricots, very ripe fruit, cream, roses and tuberose. The consistent, persistent and silky palate shows an ideal balance of sweetness and freshness that proves extremely versatile in food pairings: with desserts – especially almond cakes – foie gras, blue cheese such as Stilton or gorgonzola, and on its own, as a vino da meditazione.
